What We Do

Meals for Hungry People Because of Community Support

Loaves and Fishes was started by a small social justice committee at Nativity in 1983.  They ran out of a small kitchen with only a few big spoons and a couple of pots and pans.  They had to purchase each meal on a day by day basis but did this with one goal in mind….to feed the homeless.

They started with about 15 to 20 people a day coming to eat and when they started inviting city officials, they would begin to find $100 bills under their plates when they were done.  These small donations kept coming and started funding the way to bigger and better things.  Fast forward to 2020 Loaves is serving anywhere from 4 to 5000 meals a month and have changed the mission from feed the homeless to feed the hungry.

Our Organization

Who We Are

We are a local non-profit that, with the support of eighteen churches and civic organizations, began serving meals on June 15, 1983 in East Biloxi. We have experienced several locations and multiple hurricanes, but have always been able to return to service quite quickly due to the resilience of staff, the board, volunteers and the community.

We serve breakfast, lunch and a to-go snack bag on Tuesday, Wednesday, Fridays and Saturdays. On Tuesday, Wed, and Friday we deliver fresh meals to people who are homebound. The first and third Thursday of each month we offer a “Community Give Away” of non-designated goods so that patrons shop for their specifics needs. Depending on supplies each participant is able to fill two typical plastic shopping bags. In 2018 we provided over 58,000 meals.

We partner with several organizations to assure continuity and minimal overlap of services including: Sea Shore Mission, Back Bay Mission, Mental Health Association, and multiple churches. We participate in USDA and other food programs including: 12 Baskets, Feeding the Gulf Coast and Extra Table.

Volunteers and donors come from all sectors, individuals, clubs, social organizations, churches, business, corporations, and grants. Volunteer hours far exceed part-time staff hours and this program could not exist without them. Nor could meals be served without In-kind and financial donations
